| Project Detail : | To give a major fillip to freight movement and reduce travelling time between major cities in Tamil Nadu, the Centre is planning four major road projects in delta and southern districts. These are among the slew of highway expansion projects being planned in the state under the Bharatmala Pariyojana and the National Highway Development Programme of the Central government. They are likely to be rolled out in the next few months While feeder corridors will connect Melur and Karaikudi via Pillayarpatti, an economic corridor is being proposed from Rajapalayam to Srivilliputhur as part of the Thirumangalam-Shenkottah (151km) highway expansion. The other road projects on the anvil are expansion of residual stretches (44km) linking Madurai and Bodi and an 85km-road connecting Tirupathur in Sivaganga district with Thanjavur. The projects will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India. The NHAI has put many highway expansion projects in TN on fast track after the Edappadi K Palaniswami government took over The state had earlier stalled land acquisition for many NHAI projects during Jayalalithaa’s tenure. The projects will cover Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Theni, Sivaganga and Thanjavur Of the four projects, detailed project report is ready for the 45.85km road that would connect Melur, Pillayarpatti and Karaikudi at a cost of 756 crore. “We have already floated tender for the project,” said an NHAI official The state government will acquire 60-metre wide right of way for four-laning these projects. “The officials have completed joint measurement of land that is being acquired for the Melur-Karaikudi road and has also issued 3 (B) notice to identify the owners of the land,” said the official The Thirumangalam-Shenkottai project is being planned in two phases – Thirumangalam-Rajapalayam (71km) and Rajapalayam-Shenkottah (80km). The alignment for the first phase is being finalised, said the official. Soon, detailed project reports would be readied, he said. Alignments are being identified and project reports are under preparation for Madurai-Bodi and Tirupathur-Thanjavur roads as well, he said |
