| Project Detail : | East Delhi Municipal Corporation has set up a first-of-its-kind waste-to-compost project on a PPP model at Trilokpuri for decentralisation of household waste management. A timeline of eight months has been fixed for the project to become self-sustainable EDMC deputy mayor Kiran Vaid said that in the first phase waste will be collected door-to-door from about 2,500 households in blocks 13 and 25 of Trilokpuri. All households are being provided two dustbins to segregate their garbage into dry and wet waste. “An NGO has started outreach programme to sensitise and train people about garbage segregation in their homes,” said Pradeep Khandelwal, chief engineer from the sanitation department “The wet (green) waste is being transported to vermi-composting pits near Mahila Park. The project will not only reduce the cost incurred for collection, transportation and disposal of waste, but also help reduce burden on landfill sites, enhance environmental awareness among people and engage the informal sector in managing waste,” said Vaid Typically, about 60-66% of the garbage in a house is wet organic matter, including kitchen waste, leaves, egg shells, things that can be easily used to make compost. About 20% of the waste includes newspapers and cardboards, which can be easily recycled According to municipal solid waste bylaws notified in January, households that don’t segregate garbage would have to pay Rs 200 as penalty. So far, the civic bodies have not started challaning people. “We will learn thorough this experiment on how to go about enforcing and facilitating segregation across the city,” Khandelwal said The civic body had carried out a study in Rajvir Nagar (an unauthorised colony) and Pocket IV, Mayur Vihar-I (a planned neighbourhood) in March. The survey concluded that the waste generated by each person has increased from 500g per day in 2004 to 600g in 2018 |
