| Project Detail : | Expecting boost in tourist influx after the opening of the 8.8 km-long Rohtang tunnel for normal traffic between Kullu and Lahaul in 2019, as targeted by the Border Road Organisation Authority, the Lahaul Eco Tourism Society has urged the state government to constitute a district tourism council in Lahaul-Spiti for a better tourism perspective Chairperson of Lahaul Eco Tourism Society, Rigzin Heyreppa, said, “It is expected that after the opening of Rohtang tunnel for normal traffic, the district will witness a huge tourist rush for which we should be prepared in advance. To boost tourism in a regulated way, we are urging the state government to take necessary steps, so the people of the district will get maximum benefit from it ” He said the district was blessed with bounty of nature, where beautiful lakes such as Chandra Tal, Suraj Tal, Deepak Tal and Dhankar Lake and historical Mrikula Mata temple and Trilokinath temple were big attractions. There are century old monasteries in the region, which will draw tourists after the tunnel is opened to public “Chandra Tal known as the Moon Lake is a sight to behold in Lahaul-Spiti. It is situated at an altitude of about 14,100 ft. It is located near the Kunzum Pass and is connected by motorable road from Batal. The lake with crystal clear water, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, makes it an ideal destination for camping and trekking during summers when a majority of tourists prefer to come here,” he remarked “At present, the district lacks a district tourism office. The charge of the District Tourism Officer is entrusted to Sub-divisional Magistrate, who is unable to give his maximum time to the works related to Tourism Department”, said Heyreppa “We are asking the state government to constitute a district tourism council here and deploy a District Tourism Officer beside additional staff, which will pave the way for better tourism”, he asserted |
