Company Name : | Tourism Department |
Project Detail : | The Haryana Tourism Department has planned to develop a ‘Shaurya’ (bravery) museum at Kala Amb, a war memorial in Panipat, in the memory of the historic Third Battle of Panipat fought between the Maratha Army and Afghan invader Ahmed Shah Abdali Tourism Minister Ram Bilas Sharma told The Tribune here that the project to develop the memorial as a national tourist spot would be taken up in collaboration with the Maharashtra Government. He said the Maharashtra Government had agreed in principle and a core group comprising senior officials from both states would soon work out the details of the project The Kala Amb monument, which is a park, was built as a tribute to more than 70,000 Maratha soldiers who lost their lives in the battle According to a popular belief, the Kala Amb memorial was named after a mango tree. The spot is located about 10 km from Panipat city, near Ugrakheri village. “Since the place has emotional and historical bonding with Maharashtra, we want association of the Maharashtra Government to develop Kala Amb,” said the minister It will come up at a spot in Panipat where a mango tree turned black due to bloodshed, owing to the battle,” Sharma said According to historians, the Third Battle of Panipat was fought in 1761 between Abdali and Marathas led by Sardar Sadashiv Bhau. The battle lasted for about five months The Kala Amb memorial was constructed at the spot where Sadashiv Bhau was killed in action. It is said that so much blood was shed during the battle that a mango tree, irrigated by blood, turned black It is believed that Pandit Shagun Chand Rais, a resident of Ugrakheri village, had presented a doorway to Queen Victoria of Britain made from the black mango tree Of the two doors made, the other was fixed in the Gandhi Memorial Hall, a heritage building in Karnal, and is now preserved at the Panipat war museum |
